Alphason was a small Hi-Fi company who made some amazing tonearms in the ’80s, the HR-100S being their top end model. The entire arm wand is titanium, extremely strong and resistant to distortion, yet light enough to not impact performance. Legend has it, that free tonearms were offered to anyone who can bend the arm wand at trade shows – no one could. Quite how Alphason machined the elegant S shape in his small workshop is anyone’s guess! These days, the Alphason brand has changed hands and now specialises in Hi-Fi racks.
These arms come up rarely and often fetch anything from £300 to £500. Not bad, considering it was only £300 new in 1983! J7 at Audio Origami has a good track record of servicing and upgrading these arms.
