Starting out in Japan around 1972, Nakamichi are well known for their high end audio design. However this CA-5 pre-amplifier was actually designed by Nelson Pass (whilst at Threshold Audio) and now of Pass Labs fame. These names are better known for their class-a power amp products, but this pre-amp should not be overlooked.
What we have here is a minimalist design pre-amp, with an incredible good phono stage, suitable for moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. The capacitance or inductance of the phono stages can also be tweaked to match your cartridge. The rest of the amp is built well, very clean sounding with similar quality costing a great deal more these days.
Past second hand prices really don’t give this amp justice, I don’t expect it to sell for much more than £200. It’s worth more than that solely as a phono amp! Don’t miss this bargain, you won’t regret it.
