This old Sony processor was originally designed for decoding Dolby Digital Surround AC3 signals. From a home cinema perspective, this is a bit outdated now. However this is part of Sony’s ES (elevated standard) range and is very high quality. It is still a good pre-amp and DAC, featuring the same DAC chips as the legendary Sony TA-E9000ESD receiver (one per channel). Thus this would make a great buy a nice stereo setup that needs digital inputs (for computer, games console, TV etc).
Just partner it with a nice power amp or pair of active speakers. The built in surround sound bass management will also have you set for feeding a subwoofer for a good 2.1 setup.
