Creek are a small British Hi-Fi firm, started in late ’70s by Mike Creek. His first product was the CAS 4040 integrated amp, which initially sold for £99 (equivalent of £272 today, taking inflation into account). This amp sold like hot cakes and are two-a-penny now. They were very reliable, solidly built and produced a great sound for the price. As such they are a great option for those on a budget or wanting a second setup in the study, kitchen, dining room or for kids bedroom. It outputs around 35W, so partner with fairly efficient speakers. It also includes sports a good MM phono stage – perfect for budding bedroom DJ’s!
A later S2 version came out in 1988, which had a radically different circuit, then later still in the ’90s an S3 version came out, which refined the design further. These later models would be the preferred choice, but all are good buys. Also look out for the CAS 4140, which loses the tone controls but has greater power output.
